He briefly studied at Sampson College in Romulus, New York, before dedicating his entire life to the restoration of jewelry and timepieces. He was known as “the leprechaun” in the news, a diminutive man with a reddish beard.

Malcolm Glazer Business Career

At the Sampson Air Force Base, Glazer acquired the concession for watch repair. He began investing in Rochester single-family houses, duplexes, and commercial structures after the base closed in 1956. Eventually, he owned commercial real estate all over the country.

He acquired the upstate New York National Bank of Savannah in 1963, and he bought the West Hill Convalescent Center in Hartford, Connecticut, the first of five healthcare facilities he would eventually control. For $20 million, he bought three television stations in 1976, including WRBL in Columbus, Georgia.

Glazer established First Allied Corporation in 1984 as a holding company for all of his business ventures, serving as president and CEO. In 1988, he became the company’s largest stakeholder, and in the years that followed, he held the same position with Harley-Davidson, a maker of motorcycles.

George H. W. Bush formed the oil and gas company Zapata Corporation, which Glazer took control of. Fish protein and Caribbean supermarkets were two areas of effective diversification for Glazer. Food service equipment, food packaging, food supplies, marine protein, broadcasting, health care, real estate, banking, natural gas and oil, the internet, stocks, and bonds were all part of Glazer’s vast investment portfolio.

In a £790 million buyout, Glazer bought out Manchester United stockholders one at a time between 2003 and 2005. Due to financial issues, a sizable percentage of Manchester United’s supporters opposed Glazer’s purchase.

When Glazer had a stroke in April 2006, his sons Joel and Avram took over the club’s daily operations. After Glazer passed away in 2014, his family continued to operate the club. The six children of Glazer each own an equal share of the club’s 90% ownership.

The Glazer family lived in Rochester, New York, where Abraham worked as a watch-parts salesman. Despite their modest means, the Glazers placed a strong emphasis on education and all of their children went on to attend college.

Malcolm Glazer’s parents instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. These values helped shape his business career, as he went on to become a successful businessman and owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United football club.
