Kevin Trapp, the goalkeeper for Eintracht Frankfurt, has chosen to remain with last season’s Europa League champions despite receiving a bid from Manchester United.
Tom Heaton, a seasoned goalkeeper at Old Trafford, is the only current alternative, so United sought out the 32-year-old as they look to bring in a new backup for David de Gea.
Trapp was mentioned as a potential target earlier in the week, but Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer and Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka have also been linked with the Red Devils. The club has also been monitoring Asmir Begovic, Yann Sommer, and Alex McCarthy.
Trapp, who moved to Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, is rumoured to have received a four-year contract offer, but the Bundesliga team made it clear from the start that they had no interest in pursuing a transfer.
At the SportBild awards on Tuesday, Trapp acknowledged that he was flattered by United’s interest, but he has since moved to clarify his future objectives.
In a post on social media, he wrote: “In the past few days, much has been reported about Manchester United’s interest. It is correct that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club. I hope everyone can understand that I am dealing with such an offer and thinking about it.
“Yesterday I informed the responsible persons of both clubs that I had decided for Eintracht. I experienced sensational things here with Eintracht and we made history together. The start of the season was bumpy, but I have absolute confidence in us.”
Trapp has six caps for Germany and has been Manuel Neuer’s understudy for the past few years. Trapp will play for Frankfurt in the Champions League this season, a privilege denied to United and their new manager Erik ten Hag.
