The EFL is set to resume next week to fulfil midweek fixtures, subject to ‘local policing/security’.
Due to Queen Elizabeth II’s passing on Thursday, all English football was suspended this weekend; however, it is now anticipated to resume on Monday.
Although there is still uncertainty about whether domestic games will take place, Premier League teams that compete in Europe are planning to proceed with their upcoming fixtures, and the EFL has been given permission to follow suit.
Due to the tight schedule created by holding the World Cup in the winter, worries have been raised about fixture congestion and the dates on which rounds of cancelled matches would be played.
But as we begin a new week, some clarity has been provided on the subject thanks to journalist Simon Stone, who provided information on the plans to restart the EFL on Monday.
“Organised football will return on Monday. Four FA Trophy matches and two in the National League pyramid are allowed to go ahead as scheduled.” He later added on Twitter: “The plan is for EFL matches to be played in midweek subject to local policing/security that will be dealt with on a game-by-game basis.”
Next week, League One and League Two both have full schedules to get through before another round at the weekend, while the Championship has a full run of 11 midweek games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The status of the English football matches scheduled for next weekend is still unknown. A few weekend games are scheduled for Monday, September 19, less than a day after the Queen’s funeral.
