Luka Modric, a midfielder for Croatia, has stated that he will play for his nation in the 2023 Nations League finals, but he has made no further commitments.
Despite being in the latter stages of his career at age 37 and playing for Real Madrid, Modric is still an essential member of both his club and his country.
He played every minute of his team’s seven games while only missing a few minutes, helping Croatia to third place in the World Cup this winter. Following the game, Modric affirmed he is still not ready to hang up his boots.
“I do not know if I will play until the Euro in Germany,” he told beIN Sports. “I need to go step by step. I am enjoying the national team and I feel happy. I still think I can perform at a high level.
“I want to continue until at least the Nations League. And afterwards we will see.”
By winning their group and defeating Austria, World Cup finalists France, and Denmark, Croatia advanced to the Nations League finals.
In June 2023, the same month that Modric’s current Real Madrid contract is set to expire, they will now square off against Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.
The seasoned midfielder has stated that he hopes to retire while still playing for Real, and reports indicate that he may be about to agree to a new one-year contract that would keep him with the club through 2024, when Croatia will be gearing up for the European Championships in Germany.
