Burnley was relegated from the Premier League on Sunday after losing 2-1 at home to Newcastle United.
Mike Jackson’s side only needed to match or better Leeds United’s final-day result at Brentford, but the Clarets were relegated due to Jesse Marsch’s 2-1 victory.
Burnley’s season got off to a bad start at Turf Moor, as Callum Wilson gave Newcastle an early lead from the penalty spot just 20 minutes into the game.
After a lackluster first half, Jackson introduced January signing Wout Weghorst from the bench at halftime, but Wilson netted his second of the game, and Newcastle’s second, to leave Burnley with a mountain to climb on the hour mark.
The Clarets’ fate appeared to be sealed with Leeds leading 1-0 at Brentford at the time, but a thunderous effort from Maxwel Cornet halved the deficit at Turf Moor, before Sergi Canos pulled the Bees level at the Brentford Community Stadium to set up a potentially dramatic finish.
Despite late pressure and numerous chances to nick a decisive equaliser, Jackson’s men were unable to draw level, and Leeds’ heartbreaking relegation to the second tier was sealed by a stoppage-time goal from Raphinha.
As a result, the Lancashire club’s five-year stay in the Premier League comes to an end, with the club looking for a new permanent manager in the summer ahead of a planned return to the Premier League at the first time of asking in the 2022-23 season.
