In the waning moments of the 1-1 draw at Brentford, the Wolves striker was dismissed for a clear headbutt on Bees defender Ben Mee.
The off-the-ball incident was missed by referee Bobby Madley, who is making his top-flight comeback after being fired four years ago, but there is no getting around VAR.
Costa received his first red card in the Premier League after the officials at Stockley Park instructed Madley to take another look.
The Spaniard, who was notorious for having behavior problems, somehow avoided getting sent off in the Premier League during his three years at Chelsea.
However, since returning to England as a last-minute striker for Wolves, the 34-year-old has received one more caution than he has goals (zero).
Costa wasn’t given a red card until his 95th Premier League game, but perhaps things would have gone differently if VAR had been available between 2014 and 2017.
The Wolves striker, who won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge, will now miss the team’s next three games, leaving them once again lacking up front.
