United States President, Joe Biden has been asked to endorse Former Nigerian Finance Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, as World Trade Organization Director-General.
This is coming following the withdrawal of the South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee from the contest, leaving only the Nigerian former Minister as the only contestant for the position.
Yoo confirmed that she made the decision to withdraw from the race of becoming the Director-General of World Trade Organisation after she had discussions with the United States and other major nations, also taking into consideration the need to establish and inspire the multilateral goal of the organization, a statement from the Korean trades’ ministry on Friday confirms.
The South Korean Trade Minister withdrawal from the race came following the urge of many former US government officials asking Joe Biden to approve and endorse Okonjo-Iweala as WTO, DG after former US President Donald Trump obstruct her selection for the office.
World Trade Organisation halted the process of selecting her Director-General because a consensus agreement had not been reached by all members of the state on who should be given the office.
Meanwhile, Okonjo-Iweala had said she remains positive about becoming the first African and first female director-general in of World Trade Organization since its inception, 25-years ago despite the challenges.
