Niger kidnapping: Senate tells Buhari to declare state of emergency on security

The National Assembly has asked the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to order a state of emergency on security immediately.

The Senate, while in the session, made the call following a point of order stated by Senator Sani Musa(APC, Nigeria East) on the kidnapping of students and staff of the Government Science Secondary Scholl in Kagara Niger State, this morning, Wednesday.

According to Musa, the terrorist who abducted the students and staff of the school were dressed in military uniforms.

The number of abducted persons has not been confirmed, Musa explains, but the school has well over 100 students.

He further reveals that the security agencies said they are in pursuit of the criminals.

Senator Sabi Abdullahi, who is from Niger State, added that the kidnappers were successful following the recent success they’ve recorded in the state as over 100 persons have been abducted, he alleged.

He pointed out that the forest from FCT extending to Niger up to Zamfara State is the channel of movement and possible hideout of the criminals.

Sabi concluded that if Niger state security is being threatened, then the lives and properties of FCT residents are not safe.

Another senator from Niger state, Bima Enagi, accused the Buhari’s government of being incompetent in handling the security challenges that are facing the country.

He said, “We need to amend the constitution so that governors should be chief security officers of their states since the government at the center had failed to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians.

“The Federal Government is busy giving palliative instead of creating employment, thus aggravating insecurity.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, while commenting on the unfortunate incident, opines;

“Abduction of students from school happens in the northern part of Nigeria.

“With incidences like this, parents would be scared to take their wards to school, and the efforts of the past and by present leaders at providing education would be defeated.

“Service chiefs have to secure the schools and have to carry the states along.”
