According to the New York Daily News, a woman was arrested
on Valentine’s Day after she was caught leaving her 5-year-old granddaughter in
a freezing car so she could play the slots at a casino in Queens, New
York.
As the story goes, 56-year-old Renee Osby tried to bring her granddaughter
with her into the Resorts World Casino on Saturday morning, but was obviously
turned away since she was trying to bring a minor in with her.
A short while
later, Osby returned to the casino, ready to gamble, and this time, without the
child. Security guards at the casino remembered her face from earlier, as well
as the 5-year-old child’s, and they became suspicious.
So while Osby enjoyed
herself in the casino, they went outside and walked through the parking
lot, only to find the child sitting in Osby’s car for some time without
the heat on.
Security called the police, and when Osby was arrested, she
claimed that she had only gone into the casino to briefly cash a check.
But
according to police sources, she played the slots for about an hour.
She was arrested for acting in a manner injurious to a child, but because of
her strong standing in her community, and the fact that the 5-year-old wasn’t
actually harmed (aside from being very cold), Osby was released on bail on
Sunday.
However, according to The Root, the judge decided
that she wouldn’t be able to see her granddaughter (it’s unclear for how long
this decision will stand).
After she was arrested, the child was returned to her mother, who Osby
lived with in Bushwick. Because the judge decided that Osby wouldn’t be able to
see the 5-year-old, she is reportedly moving in with her brother in the
Brownsville section of Brooklyn to abide by that ruling.
