A 19-year-old man has been remanded in jail by a magistrates court sitting in Ogudu, Lagos state, on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, for the alleged rape of his two sisters.
The young man identified as Andrew Chinedu, an apprentice who lives at Irawo, was arraigned on a two-count charge of child defilement and sexual assault.
The court heard from the prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, that the accused allegedly committed the offences between June 2018 and Septembet 2018 at Abayomi Street, Irawo in Ajegunle area of Ikorodu in Lagos State.
The prosecutor also stated that the Lagos State Domestic and Social Violence Office, which was initially called in to handle the case, confirmed that the girls were violated and urged their father to report the case to the police.
Ihiehie added that the accused lived in the same compound with his parents and the girls.
When questioned, the older girl claimed that the accused would call her into his room when their parents were not around to have sex with her.
“Any time I refused, he would beat me. He normally promises to buy me sweet but he never did,” Ihiehie quoted the child to have said.
The Inspector also said that the six-year-old girl confirmed what her sister said, telling the police that the accused always had sex with her whenever their parents were not around and would beat them whenever they refused.
”He would tell her he wants to show her something and carry her to his bed and remove her cloths.
“She said it was when her elder sister fell sick and their father took them to the hospital that she opened up to him.”
According to Ihiehie, the offences contravened Sections 137 and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The prosecutor went on to urge the court to remand the accused in prison pending legal advice from the DPP’s office.
The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, ordered that Chinedu be remanded in prison.
Magistrate Kubeinje also ordered that Chinedu spend the next 65 days in prison until legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) office is receieved.
She later adjourned the case until March 20 for mention.
