From Basketmouth and AY Makun to Bovi and others, not all Nigerian stand-up comedians get along.
Here are at least four Nigerian comedians who are feuding in the standup comedy world.
1. Basketmouth and AY
Although the exact origin of Basketmouth’s cold war with his colleague AY comic is unknown, it is an open truth that the two are not on good terms.
Their feuds have also hampered their work and careers in the comedy profession.
Basketmouth famously skipped the last AY Live show in Lagos. “I don’t go where I am not invited,” he remarked when asked why he didn’t go. Apt!
However, Nollywood actor and comedian Ayo Makun, often known as AY, has disclosed the reason for his supposed feud with Basketmouth.
A fan questioned him, @aycomedian, during an Ask Me Anything session on his Instagram page, “Do you actually have any issues with Basketmouth?”
AY claimed that he had no quarrel with Basketmouth, but that he had a “uncontrollable superiority complex.”
According to AY, avoiding Basketmouth’s “constant childishness” became crucial for his sanity.
AY comedian is a dynamic entertainer in Nigeria with a foothold in Nollywood. He went on to say that he preferred to maintain ties with folks that shared his mood.
2. AY and Bovi
Bovi believes comedian AY copied his joke from 2008.
According to Bovi’s account, which he gave 8 years ago, a security guard had to headbutt his boss’s daughter since the boss had previously commanded him to use his head to keep the daughter from leaving.
In AY’s rendition, he instructs his security guard to use his head in order to prevent his girlfriend from seeing him while he is on a date with another.
When the security guard asks how to keep her out, AY answers, “Use your head.” The security guard headbutts the girl as she approaches.
Bovi’s admirers agreed that the skit violated Bovi’s intellectual property. Others say that while comedians may copy jokes, employing them in performance is quite different.
3. Princess and Lolo 1
Omotunde Adebowale, a Nigerian comedienne and Wazobia FM on-air personality known as Lolo1, chastised Princess, another female comedienne, on Instagram for her attitude and behaviour on stage.
Princess, according to Lolo1, was harsh and ridiculous, especially on stage. In her Instagram rage, Lolo wrote.
The Wazobia FM personality claimed that her colleague, Princess, had let “pettiness,” “rudeness,” and “downright classlessness” outweigh any aptitude she possessed.
“I’m not generally one to call people out (especially my coworkers), but someone needs to talk to PRINCESS the ‘comedian.'”
4. Helen Paul and Gordons
During her stand-up routine, Nigerian stand-up comedian Helen Paul, famed for her stage pranks and excellent voice impressions, made jokes about male comedians such as AY, Gordons, Alibaba, I Die, and a slew of others.
Gordons, on the other hand, got on stage and began subtly jabbing Helen Paul with his trademark baroque comedy.
Their conflict occurred in 2015 at AY Live in Port Harcourt. Since then, the two have not been seen together.
Other comedians chimed in with their thoughts on Helen Paul and Gordon’s feud.
Basket mouth was asked what he felt about Helen Paul and Gordon’s on-stage rift that went viral on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at the Felabration event.
It was none of his business, he said. “To be honest, I don’t care. That is correct. I don’t give a damn. Allow them to beat themselves up on stage if they want to. “I don’t care,” he declared.
